Do you need guidance on managing triglycerides?

Julia Morris

The NICE guideline on lipid modification was first published in June 2008 and updated in March 2010 (see guidance.nice.org.uk/CG67 and also eGuidelines.co.uk for the Guidelines summary). Feedback on the summary of this guideline on the eGuidelines.co.uk website shows that GPs find it very useful, however a few of them note the lack of recommendations on the management of raised triglycerides.

A consensus guideline* is now available on this topic, and is discussed by Dr Honor Merriman—GP and CPD Tutor and a member of the working party—on page 41 of this issue. The working party comprised a multidisciplinary group of experts drawn from several geographical locations. The guideline covers diagnosis, physical examination, laboratory investigations, management of hypertriglyceridaemia, and referral, and includes a management algorithm.1,2

The summary consensus guideline was published on eGuidelines.co.uk in June 2010 and has garnered a number of positive comments from healthcare professionals who have stated that it is a ‘well explained guideline on hypertriglyceridaemia’ that provides ‘a good framework within which to assess patients’.
